Original Matter Labs Licence Terms

Personal use is free. Commercial and institutional use requires a paid annual licence.

A licence can be purchased here.

These terms explain how Original Matter Labs may be used by individuals, educators, organisations, schools, colleges, universities, training providers, businesses, and other institutions.

Original Matter Labs includes browser-based psychology lab suites, teaching tools, student research tools, task demos, CSV export tools, and related educational resources published by Original Matter.

By using Original Matter Labs, you agree to these licence terms. If you purchase a commercial or institutional licence, your order confirmation and invoice act as your licence certificate.

1. Licence types

Free personal licence

Individual personal use of Original Matter Labs is free.

Personal use means use by one individual for their own private study, learning, coursework, independent practice, non-commercial research preparation, or personal educational development.

You do not need to purchase a commercial/institutional licence if you are using the Labs privately as an individual student, learner, researcher, teacher, or educator for your own personal preparation or learning.

Commercial/institutional licence

Commercial or institutional use requires a paid annual licence.

Commercial or institutional use includes use by, for, or on behalf of a school, college, university, department, course team, programme, business, training provider, tutoring company, agency, charity, public body, paid course provider, or any other organisation.

This includes use in teaching, demonstrations, practical classes, workshops, staff resources, student support, internal learning materials, paid courses, client work, commercial training, or any organised educational or professional setting.

2. What the commercial/institutional licence covers

A commercial/institutional licence allows the named licence holder to use Original Matter Labs during the active licence period.

The named licence holder may be an organisation, department, course team, programme, school, college, university, training provider, business, or similar body, as identified at checkout or on the invoice.

The licence permits the named licence holder to:

  • Use Original Matter Labs in teaching, demos, workshops, practical classes, and student research activities.

  • Use the Labs with students, staff, clients, learners, trainees, or paid course participants.

  • Link to the Labs from internal teaching materials, learning platforms, course pages, and staff resources.

  • Use exported data from the Labs for teaching, classroom analysis, student projects, and internal educational purposes.

  • Refer to Original Matter Labs in course guidance, lesson materials, module resources, or workshop instructions.

3. Licence period and renewal

The commercial/institutional licence runs for 12 months from the date of purchase unless a different licence period is stated on the invoice.

The licence renews yearly while the subscription remains active and payment is successfully made.

If the subscription is cancelled, payment fails, or the renewal invoice is not paid, the licence expires at the end of the current paid licence period.

Each paid order confirmation and invoice confirms the licence for the relevant licence period.

4. Licence certificate

Your order confirmation and invoice act as your licence certificate.

The licence certificate should identify the licence holder, purchase date, licence period, and product purchased. Please enter the correct organisation, department, team, course, or business details at checkout so the licence holder can be clearly identified.

If your institution needs a purchase order, invoice copy, or licence confirmation for internal records, contact Original Matter using the contact details on the site.

5. What is not allowed

The licence does not allow you to:

  • Resell, repackage, sublicense, or redistribute Original Matter Labs as your own product or service.

  • Copy, clone, scrape, reconstruct, or reproduce the Labs, their code, design, structure, wording, tasks, or interface for another product.

  • Host copied versions of the Labs on another website, learning platform, intranet, app, or server without written permission.

  • Remove, hide, or alter Original Matter branding, copyright notices, licence notices, or attribution.

  • Use the Labs as part of a competing product, paid resource bundle, software platform, or commercial tool without written permission.

  • Sell access to the Labs as a standalone product.

  • Use the Labs for clinical diagnosis, clinical decision-making, psychological assessment, employment selection, legal assessment, or other high-stakes decisions.

6. Educational purpose

Original Matter Labs is designed for education, teaching demonstrations, introductory student research, classroom activities, and learning support.

The Labs are not clinical instruments, diagnostic tools, regulated medical devices, or validated tools for high-stakes psychological assessment.

Educators and organisations are responsible for deciding whether a Lab is suitable for their course, class, activity, research exercise, or teaching context.

7. Student research, ethics, and data

Where Original Matter Labs allows users to collect or export study data, the licence holder is responsible for how that data is collected, stored, analysed, shared, and deleted.

If you use the Labs for student research, classroom research, demonstrations involving participants, or any activity involving personal data, you are responsible for consent, safeguarding, ethics approval, institutional policy, data protection, and any other legal or professional requirements that apply to your setting.

Do not collect sensitive personal data, identifiable participant information, or data from vulnerable groups unless you have the appropriate permission, safeguards, and lawful basis to do so.

8. Access and availability

Original Matter aims to keep the Labs available, usable, and maintained, but access may occasionally be interrupted for updates, maintenance, technical problems, hosting issues, browser changes, or other reasons outside our control.

We may update, improve, replace, rename, reorganise, or remove individual Labs or features over time.

A commercial/institutional licence grants permission to use Original Matter Labs during the active licence period. It does not guarantee permanent access to any specific version, feature, design, interface, or individual tool.

9. Intellectual property

Original Matter Labs, including the design, code, wording, structure, interface, task formats, educational framing, graphics, branding, and related materials, remains the intellectual property of Original Matter or its owner.

Nothing in these terms transfers ownership of Original Matter Labs, its code, content, branding, or intellectual property to the user, licence holder, purchaser, organisation, or institution.

10. Fair use in teaching materials

Licence holders may refer to Original Matter Labs in teaching materials, course pages, slides, handouts, internal learning resources, and student instructions during the active licence period.

These references should link back to Original Matter Labs where practical and should not imply that the Labs were created, owned, endorsed, or operated by the licence holder.

11. Cancellation

You may cancel a recurring commercial/institutional licence subscription to prevent future renewals.

Cancelling a subscription does not automatically refund the current licence period. The licence remains active until the end of the paid period unless terminated for breach of these terms.

12. Termination

Original Matter may suspend or terminate a licence if the licence holder breaches these terms, misuses the Labs, attempts to copy or redistribute the Labs, fails to pay the licence fee, or uses the Labs in a way that could harm Original Matter, users, students, or the public.

If a licence is terminated for breach, the licence holder must stop using Original Matter Labs for commercial or institutional purposes immediately.

13. Liability

Original Matter Labs is provided for educational use. It is the responsibility of the user, educator, organisation, or institution to check outputs, interpret results appropriately, and decide whether the Labs are suitable for their intended use.

Original Matter is not responsible for teaching decisions, research design decisions, assessment decisions, data handling decisions, institutional compliance, participant management, or any consequences arising from the misuse or misinterpretation of the Labs.

14. Changes to these terms

Original Matter may update these licence terms from time to time.

The version published on this page applies unless a separate written agreement has been made between Original Matter and the licence holder.
